Our Mission
To provide individualized, compassionate and empowering supports that help people with developmental disabilities learn, participate, build independence and experience meaningful belonging within their communities.
Ubuntu is more than a name. It is a belief in our shared humanity and in the strength of caring together.
“I am what I am because of who we all are.”
At Ubuntu Community Services, we believe people thrive through connection, belonging and support that recognizes who they are. This philosophy shapes every conversation, every care plan and every moment we share with individuals and families.
We provide specialized respite care for people with developmental disabilities at every stage of life, from childhood through the senior years. Our approach is personalized, grounded in compassion, dignity and respect.
To provide individualized, compassionate and empowering supports that help people with developmental disabilities learn, participate, build independence and experience meaningful belonging within their communities.
A community where every person is valued, supported and given meaningful opportunities to reach their potential.
Families entrust us with the people who matter most to them. We take that responsibility seriously.
Good support begins with listening and grows through relationships built on trust.
Our trained and dedicated support workers bring both skill and a genuine desire to connect with the people they support. We take time to learn each person's needs, routines, interests and preferences.
That understanding helps us create a supportive environment where individuals feel valued and families know their loved one is being treated with care.

Our services are designed to complement the supports available through schools, families, community organizations and Government of Alberta disability programs. Depending on an individual's eligibility, approved service plan, funding arrangement and authorization, Ubuntu may provide supports in coordination with programs such as Edmonton Public Schools (EPSB), Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) and Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD).
We work collaboratively with families, guardians, caseworkers, school professionals and other members of a person's support network. Our goal is consistent, person-centered support that respects each individual's needs, abilities, preferences, safety, dignity and independence.
Ubuntu Community Services works with Edmonton Public Schools as a service provider to support eligible students who need individualized educational and developmental assistance. Support may help students work toward goals in communication, literacy, numeracy, life skills, social development, community participation and independence.
Depending on the student's approved arrangement, we may coordinate with parents, guardians, teachers, school administrators and other members of the educational team to support consistency with the student's educational programming.
FSCD is a Government of Alberta program that works with eligible families of children with disabilities to help them access supports based on the child and family's needs. Depending on eligibility and an approved agreement, supports may include respite in or outside the home, child-care supports, personal care or developmental assistance, and specialized services.
Where authorized under a family's FSCD agreement, Ubuntu may provide respite care, community-based support, help with daily living activities, developmental activities and other approved services. Families have a role in choosing providers; talk with your FSCD worker about your agreement, approved services and hours, and whether Ubuntu can be engaged for your family's arrangement.
Alberta's PDD program helps eligible adults with developmental disabilities plan, coordinate and access services that support them to live as independently as possible in their communities. Depending on the person's approved arrangement, supports may be provided through agencies or through Family Managed Services (FMS).
Where Ubuntu is appropriately engaged as a provider, our team can work alongside individuals, families, guardians, PDD workers and other support team members. Support may focus on community participation, independence, daily living skills, social inclusion, recreation or other services authorized in the individual's plan.
Questions about eligibility, funding, approved hours, service providers, agreements or the transition from children's services to adult supports are understandable. Our team can help explain the service-provider process and communicate with the appropriate professionals.
For children and youth, families can learn about FSCD eligibility and how to apply through the Government of Alberta. For adults, families can learn about PDD eligibility and the application process through Alberta's official program information.
